Taxiway Repair – Chambers Airfield – Norfolk, Va.

Heard Concrete Construction installed 740,000sf of airfield paving using a truss screed and slip-form paving machine. This HEM 12-27 slip-form paving machine is the newest and largest of any owned by a VA Corporation. Installation included initial saw-cut, dowel installation, re-saw and joint sealant. The mix was a 650 Flex delivered in ready mix trucks and was placed at a 2” slump, 12-13” thick on an asphalt base. The paving was placed in 25’ wide strips averaging 600 yards per placement.  Dowels were drilled and epoxied at each construction joint. Cooperation with air operations was ongoing; the project was completed without conflicts.
